Kate Thompson is a commercial and editorial photographer based in Richmond, Virginia. Whether it’s a personal project or an assignment, she is a big picture thinker and brings empathy and a quiet thoughtfulness to collaborations large and small. She uses her camera as a way to connect with others, ask questions, and process the world around her. Her editorial work explores the themes of family, design, public health, and identity. Her commercial work is largely hospitality-focused with a mix of interiors, architectural, and lifestyle imagery.
Kate wandered a circuitous path to photography. She earned a Bachelor’s in Spanish from the University of Virginia followed by a Master’s in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology from Columbia University, ultimately using her linguistic education as a springboard back into exploring the visual world through photography. Kate is a native English speaker but has been fluent in Spanish since spending several months in Bolivia as a child.
Kate is the co-founder of design studio Palindrome Creative Co. Her work has included commissions and collaborations with The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Bloomberg Businessweek, Discovery +, Vox Media, The Magnolia Network, NPR, Virginia Public Media, Apartment Therapy, Google, Garden & Gun, Hyatt, Destination Hotels, Imbibe, Virginia Living, Eater, Forbes, Country Living, House Beautiful, Travel + Leisure - and others.
